✍️ Notes from the Editors

Live from New York, it’s… a Unicorner founder dinner! We had a great time with some of the most promising founders in NYC. 🗽

Missed it? We’ll be back sooner than you think. In the meantime, we’ll be in SF for another founder dinner on Thursday, May 8.

To cap off with a quick and exciting update from a past Unicorner company—Angel Q (previously Angel Kids), the AI-powered safe browser for kids, has launched its beta. They’ve graciously offered the beta to Unicorner readers for free; you can download it on the Apple App Store and use the activation code vest-best-test.

Democratizing clinical AI

Ferrum Health partners with hospital systems to safely integrate clinical AI, reduce medical errors, and enhance patient outcomes. By providing a secure, on-premise platform, the health technology company enables hospitals to evaluate, deploy, and govern AI models at scale without compromising data privacy or patient safety. Its mission is to close the gap between cutting-edge AI and clinical adoption, modernizing healthcare delivery in a way that’s sustainable, trusted, and effective.

  • Used in over 250 healthcare facilities

  • Over 2.5 million unique patient records analyzed to date

👫 Founder Story

Ferrum Health CEO Pelu Tran met Kenneth Ko, Ferrum’s CTO, during his first year of medical school. Ko was the roommate of Tran’s best friend, and they bonded over games like Rock Band and Super Smash Bros. While Tran’s first startup, Augmedix, didn’t align with Ko’s expertise in enterprise infrastructure, that changed with Ferrum Health. As the idea for Ferrum took shape, it became clear that Ko’s experience building enterprise infrastructure at companies like Cisco and Harmonic was exactly what was needed to build the foundational systems for their healthcare AI platform. The partnership came naturally and proved to be a perfect fit.

💼 Opportunities

🔮 Our Analysis

Despite the global healthcare sector generating over 2.3 zettabytes of data (that’s 2.3 billion terabytes, or approximately 30% of the world’s data), 97% of it goes unused. Moreover, 77% of hospital systems lack an integrated analytics strategy, leaving them ill-equipped to harness the full potential of clinical AI tools, optimize operations, or make data-driven decisions that could improve patient outcomes and reduce costs.

Ferrum’s platform directly tackles this systemic issue by serving as a secure, enterprise-grade “AI hub” within hospital environments. It allows health systems to seamlessly validate and deploy third-party algorithms across departments without letting sensitive patient data leave the firewall. By providing the missing infrastructure to deploy clinical AI at scale, Ferrum Health demonstrates strong product–market fit in aligning technological innovation with an urgent clinical need.

Ferrum has built a defensible strategy with its platform model, early market traction, and experienced leadership. Unlike single-solution vendors, Ferrum positions itself as an integration layer supporting a broad library of algorithms spanning radiology, oncology, cardiology, and more on one deployable platform. This vendor-neutral approach gives hospitals flexibility to adopt dozens of AI applications through one unified system, which can be fully implemented in weeks rather than years

Early traction underscores the demand for this model, as Ferrum’s platform has already processed 2.5 million patient records to date across 250 hospital sites, including major health networks like Sutter Health and Carle Health. Ferrum has also driven significant results for both patients and providers. One health partner increased lung cancer detection rates by 77% using an AI deployed with Ferrum, while health systems more broadly have cut IT costs by up to 75%. Such milestones not only validate Ferrum’s approach but also create network effects: as more hospitals and AI vendors join its ecosystem, the platform becomes an increasingly entrenched utility.

Guiding this growth is a leadership team with deep healthcare experience. CEO Pelu Tran, for example, previously co-founded Augmedix, scaling it to serve over 20 major health systems before its $139 million acquisition by Commure in 2024. This combination of a scalable platform, clear market traction, and experienced leadership gives Ferrum a durable competitive advantage.

As AI adoption in healthcare becomes a necessity, Ferrum is the connective layer that turns potential into reality.
