Climate-friendly dimming windows

🦄 Unicorner Startup of the Week: Miru

✍️ Notes from the Editors

Today's article is brought to you by Ryse. This smart home company grew 200% year-over-year—and you have the opportunity to invest.

Maybe we’re oversharing, but did you know the two of us are long-time prescription glasses holders? 🤓

Most people who wear glasses have at some point encountered transition lenses that turn darker under sunlight. With that in mind, Miru’s mission can feel familiar.

If you’re impressed by smart windows, you’ll probably also be interested in smart blinds. Our partner this week, Ryse, is building next-generation smart window shades. Read more below!

By the way, we’re coming back to SF on March 20 for an emerging managers dinner alongside Mercury and Sydecar. If you’ve recently started a fund, begun investing, or are thinking of starting a fund soon, be sure to register—you definitely won’t want to miss this one.

Climate-friendly dimming windows

Miru is developing “dynamic electrochromic window technology” that enables window manufacturers to create windows that uniformly tint. Its “eWindow” technology is capable of working on windows of varying curvatures and claims to offer low haze, neutral gray color, and more. Miru also claims that, when used with buildings, it increases building energy efficiency by 20%, and when used with vehicles, it increases driving range by 10%.

A word from our partner

This smart home company grew 200% year-over-year…

No, it’s not Ring or Nest—it’s RYSE, a leader in smart shade automation, and you can invest for just $1.90 per share.

RYSE’s innovative SmartShades have already transformed how people control their window coverings, bringing automation to homes without the need for expensive replacements. With 10 fully granted patents and a game-changing Amazon court judgment protecting their tech, RYSE is building a moat in a market projected to grow 23% annually.

This year alone, RYSE has seen revenue grow by 200% year over year and expanded into 127 Best Buy stores, with international markets on the horizon. Plus, with partnerships with major retailers like Home Depot and Lowe’s already in the works, they’re just getting started.

Now is your chance to invest in the company disrupting home automation—before they hit their next phase of explosive growth. But don’t wait; this opportunity won’t last long.

🔮 Our Analysis

First came the smartphone. Then, smartwatches and smart TVs. Now, smart glass (not to be confused with smart glasses). Miru is making windows intelligent, and the way it’s doing it is just as clever as the underlying technology.

First, Miru licenses its technology to manufacturers instead of manufacturing windows in-house. This enables the company to focus on improving the technology and scaling adoption, completely sidestepping the challenge of manufacturing and selling windows. Since its technology is designed to work with any glass fabricator that meets industry standard requirements, Miru’s technology is relatively straightforward to adopt. This competitive advantage allows Miru to scale adoption quickly.

Second, there are a variety of applications that can benefit from Miru’s windows, from architectural to automotive and many other applications. This means Miru has a large market of potential customers. Moreover, the efficiency and climate benefits of eWindows are universal, regardless of the application, meaning many industries are incentivized to license the technology.

Given these clear advantages, we believe Miru has a winning product and business model, alongside a window of opportunity to see its technology in windows worldwide.
